CCTVal Researchers and USM Directors met with a representative of the Chinese Company, BYD (Build your Dreams), dedicated to electrical innovation research and vehicle manufacturing, in order to move forward with the signing of a collaboration agreement.

BYD, is a Company founded in 1995, focused on the research and development of their own technological innovations, mainly related to energy efficiency. Some of their products are rechargeable batteries for mobile devices and eco-friendly vehicles, like the car model F3 (2008), the first electronic car with real and effective zero- emission operation (winner of 68 distinctions during the first sales year).

The meeting was conducted within the collaborative framework that both institutions established this year. This instance counted with the presence of directors and academics from Centers belonging to the University: CCTVal, 3IE, IF, Proyecto MECESUP INES and CORFO’s Ingeniería 2030 project. On the other hand, Tamara Berrios, Country Manager Chile, represented BYD’s South American Division.

This covenant is based on the organizations’ capabilities to develop new technologies that are applicable to the national industry. This agreement seeks to combine the Company´s experience and the research and engineering capabilities found at the University, which will have as a first milestone, the implementation of a mobile laboratory housed in an electronic bus owned by BYD, which will travel to different areas between the Metropolitan and V Regions.

It is worth mentioning that this kind of technology is quite unknown in our country, opening up a number of opportunities for BYD, as explained by Tamara Berrios, “this is something new for the country. Therefore, the support of a University, as is the case of the Santa Maria, where they develop technical and engineering areas, allow us to have the support needed to evaluate experiences and data and to then continue on to the next step, which is the introduction of electro-mobility to the country”.

The agreement will have as its first milestone the implementation of an electricity fed vehicle, with an inbuilt mobile laboratory. Additionally, a data collection system will be integrated to conduct a study aimed at verifying the competitive advantages of electronic mobility over other energy sources and vehicles.

In regards to the emerging collaboration, CCTVal manager, Francisco Soto, highlights that “this is an opportunity for the Center to collaborate in the field of IOT application development in the areas of public transportation, development of monitoring solutions and battery predictive analysis”. He also emphasizes the interest that this collaboration has raised in other companies with which CCTVal already has projects, as is the case with Chilquinta and ENTEL.
