Directors of the Chinese company, world leader in communication technology development, visited the University and met with academics and researchers, with the aim of establishing a strategic partnership.

Due to a memorandum of understanding signed between both institutions, the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María will be the first university in Chile to certify its students in the operation and maintenance of Huawei equipment.

Aimed at USM undergraduate students and professionals, this certification will be made available at the University by 2018, through a training program called, Huawei authorized information and network academy, HAINA.

The agreement with the multinational Chinese company specialized in the research and development of communication technology, was signed by the Dean of the USM, Darcy Fuenzalida, the USM Liaison with the industry Director, Patricio Núñez, Huawei’s Global Service Vice-president, Zhang Guijun and Huawei Chile’s CEO, Qin Hua, during a visit conducted by the Company’s executives to the Institution in Valparaíso.

This rapprochement between one of the leading companies in telecommunication equipment and the USM, is an initiative promoted by the Centro Científico Tecnológico de Valparaíso (CCTVal) of the University and it will involve participation of the Liaison with the Industry Division; the Electronics Department, through the Telematics degree and Electronics degree; and the Technical University degrees in Telecommunications and Networks. Additionally, this collaboration agreement is aligned with the objectives associated to Pillar 3 of the Ingeniería 2030 Project, which seeks to coordinate collaboration networks between the University and the Industry.

Strategic approach

“This memorandum of understanding will allow us to work closely with Huawei, bringing technology closer to our University, to our students and professors, so that we can contribute to the training processes of our students, giving them access to cutting-edge technology and new technological developments, and at the same time, allowing our academics to carry out research of these technologies”, pointed out the USM Dean, Darcy Fuenzalida.

“It is a tremendously valuable opportunity to have the responsibility of becoming the first University to close an agreement of this nature, and first strategic partner for Huawei in Chile. We are much honored to be the recipients of their trust, and I am confident that our academics and professors will be committed contributors to the challenges that will be developed here in the country”, the authority added, stating his intention to project this alliance towards other areas.

On the other hand, Huawei pointed out that the agreement between both institutions, will allow to “promote innovation in Chile and will generate a collaborative environment among the academia and the private sector. Furthermore, this alliance reflects our values and our strong commitment with Chile, centered on a strategic alliance that will benefit society as a whole, by making available to the USM students cutting-edge technologies, that together with Huawei’s perseverance, will help to improve the quality of life of people and the industry’s competitiveness”, Huawei Chile’s CEO, Qin Hua, commented.

Benefits for the Institution and its professionals

Meanwhile, the USM liaison with the Industry Director, Patricio Núñez, highlighted that “with this agreement the USM positioning in the Electronics field is confirmed by the global company’s acknowledgement”.

“Huawei trusted us to develop an academy that not only targets our students, who will be able to opt to a free of charge Huawei technology certification, but that is also aimed at former students, who will be able to participate in this; distinguishing the USM as the only University in Chile to deliver this certification”, Núñez pointed out.

As the person in charge of managing this joint work, the Telematics Civil Engineering academic, Werner Creixell, values this rapprochement with the company, stating, “It opens up a starting point for a collaboration with Huawei that we hope will go even further towards different areas of technological innovation, something the University is very committed to”.

“As a whole, the University is much honored to have been chosen by Huawei and we believe that this speaks well about our technical capabilities and technologies at a national level, which is something that interests us: innovation, technology and being able to deliver training options to the community. On the other hand, we are looking into the possibility of creating an innovation center with Huawei”, the academic added.

Finally, in regards to the benefits that this certification will represent to the professionals graduated from the USM, Creixell claimed, “the students, in the professional and competitive environment must stand out from their peers -from this institution and others- and having a certification that enables them to operate and maintain equipment with dominating technology, without a doubt, will give them an edge over their competition”.

The signing of this agreement is the start of a collaborative work between the University and Huawei, where other alliance opportunities oriented at technological development and research will be explored.
