SANTIAGO – An unprecedented collaboration for an underground laboratory is what Andes proposes, an instance seeking to build the first research center with these characteristics in the southern hemisphere and the third deepest one in the world, nevertheless, the coordinator of this instance regrets that the Chilean government has yet to approve its realization, with little time left to be included in the building project.

ANDES, acronym for Agua Negra Deep Experimentation Site, coordinated by the physicist Claudio Dib, would be located in the deepest area of the highway tunnel soon to be built in the Coquimbo Region –on the national side-, which will connect with the Argentinian locality of San Juan.

In a letter to the Director published this Monday in El Mercurio, Dib regrets that “even though the idea has been very well received by the Ministries of Public Works, Foreign Affairs, Education and Conicyt, to date it does not count with official approval”.

A worrying situation since “the deadline to include the work in the tunnel bid is fast approaching” the expert adds. Furthermore, he assures that Argentina’s Ministry of Science “approved the Andes proposal back in 2012”.

This laboratory consists of a project led by scientists from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Chile; and it will focus on “astroparticle physics like neutrinos and dark matter and on geophysics, seismology, biology, with services for the industry and environmental studies”, Dib comments in his missive.

Government approval is still expected for the instance that could be decisive for the development of science in Chile and the region, a situation that the physicist affirms would be “beneficial to the community […] for Chile to make a decision as soon as possible”.
