The activity organized by CCTVal consists of five courses on various topics in the area of particle physics

Students from national and international universities meet at the 5th Chilean School of High Energy Physics, organized by the Technological Scientific Center of Valparaíso (CCTVal) that took place from 15 to 18 of January at the Technical University Federico Santa María in Valparaíso.

The initiative consists of five courses on various topics related to particle physics. One of them is the standard model, which functions as an introduction to the knowledge of the phenomena observed in the field; Another topic addressed, meanwhile, is the collision physics, which brings the participants of the school closer to the work of a particle accelerator.

More advanced are the lessons on neutrino physics and quantum chromodynamics, that in combination with the class on astroparticles shows the most innovative discoveries in the field today.

This activity, although it is aimed especially at graduate students who are pursuing their postgraduate studies in physics, is increasingly receiving more people from related careers who are motivated by their interest in the topics covered in the school. In this sense, the CCTVal researcher in charge of the event, Dr. Óscar Castillo, notes that in the activity "there are students from almost all Chilean universities."

"Of course the main universities presents are the closest ones. In this particular version, due to the crisis in neighboring countries, we have very few representatives from Brazil, but on the other hand, this time we also have the surprise of participants from the United States and Norway, "he added.

Forming the scientists of the future

For Dr. Castillo, the school "helps first level scientists give us their speeches and points of view about physics, as well as helping students who are not from this University to learn what we are doing here, and not only what is dictated in the courses ".

Also, the organizer of the instance reaffirmed that "this allows us to interact with other universities, not only at the level of researchers, but also among students. We are creating the new generation of researchers, and they have to have networks of contacts and collaborators; not only with people from top ten universities in the world, but also with the institutions that we have here nearby, to make a synergy and develop together globally ".

One of the possible future researchers to whom Dr. Castillo refers could be Nicolás Pérez, a student of the Master's in Physics at the USM, who considers the school "a good opportunity to talk with our peers about what we do, our study and our work; besides this is an opportunity to learn from more experienced physicists ".

According to Pérez, this type of event is important because " people of very good level attend the event and that gives a weight to the University and the country, positioning it as a Latin American reference in the area of High Energy Physics. "
