Topics such as productive development, energy, urban transport and freight, recycling, urban planning and citizen participation were analyzed by national and international authorities and experts who attended the Do! Smart City Santiago.

With the presence of authorities such as the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Gloria Hutt, and the active participation of companies, municipalities, universities and innovators, the Santa María University among them, was held on August 29 at the Titanium Convention Center. third version of the Do! Smart City, organized by D.S.C.

On the occasion, the latest advances in products and services linked to sustainable and intelligent cities were exhibited, in order to generate solutions and answers to the current problems faced by cities and their habitants.

The general structure of the event was developed with a forum-panel program where prominent local and foreign specialists, authorities, businessmen and representatives of social and citizen organizations discussed and analyzed various citizen topics.

In parallel, three working groups were organized to address issues such as: smart urban mobility, smart energies and electro mobility. in order to identify methodologies, indicators and tools to assess the progress of Chile in these areas and propose solutions. One of them -the table on electro mobility- was directed by Professor Mauricio Osses, an academic from Federico Santa María Technical University, table where the Energy Seremi of Chile, Sebastián Herrera, was also present.

The Regional Secretary noted the importance for the State "to be able to talk and establish what are the challenges to implement electro mobility". Adding, that what was discussed in the working table "is quite satisfactory and productive for us as we can have this feedback on behalf of actors of the private sector, representatives of different unions, representatives of the academic world and in particular of the University".

Close relationship of the USM with the State

The development of the electro mobility table that took place within the framework of the congress was organized by the USM at the request of D.S.C, and will be the first of three more tables to be held by the end of the year.

"The presentation of Professor Osses was quite interesting and allows us to delve deeper into the matter, so we will continue to meet in order to establish different courses of action," said Sebastián Herrera. "This will be fruitful for the challenge that we as a government have to promote electro mobility and multiply by ten electric vehicles by 2022," said the Seremi.

The academic Mauricio Osses, for his part, commented that "there was a lot of interest in the presentation. Participated representatives of the Government, municipalities, various industrial sectors, some universities and trade associations such as the College of Engineers.

Of the next three tables that will be held on the same topic, one will take place in September at the Catholic University, joining electro mobility with the urban sector, under the 2030 Engineering project in which the USM and the PUC collaborate.

The second will be in October, on electromobility and mining, and will be held at the San Joaquin Campus of the USM. "We will show, among others, the hydrogen project in mining and activities that we are developing with several mining companies to incorporate electric vehicles," said Osses.

The third meeting will be held at the College of Engineers, in November, and on that occasion, the Ministry will present its position and will address issues of public policy regarding electro mobility with the support of the academy.

"One of the important points is that the Ministry of Energy entrusted us, as a University, to develop a digital platform with information on electro-mobility to different sectors. This workshop was one of the first we are doing in the framework of this project, to collect opinions from relevant actors and to know what kind of information this technological observatory must contain, all of that, is being carried out with the support of the USM and it´s basal centers AC3E and CCTVal ", said the academic.

This and other projects are framed in a cooperation agreement to be signed between the Rector, Darcy Fuenzalida, and the Minister of Energy, Susana Jiménez.

"The Ministry wants to continue working with us, and also through its energy sustainability agency, we are training teachers, to be one of the first centers in Latin America to train electro-mobility technicians," said Mauricio Osses.

Smart cities

The concept of Smart City integrates information and communication technologies (ICT) and various devices connected to the Network to optimize the efficiency of the city's services and the connection with its inhabitants.

Given this, the Transport and Telecommunications Minister, Gloria Hutt -who participated in the fórum panel called: "Mobility and infrastructure at the rhythm of the city" - discussed the public policies being designed by the Nacional Government to promote the development of smart cities and sustainable in the country.

"It is a fact that the urban population will grow. It is also a fact that the urban space will be one of the scarcest resources in the coming years and that is why we have to define what we want to do with it ", said the Minister.

"The urban densification makes the houses smaller and with this, having a patio of your own starts to be a luxury. The patio, begins to be more the Street, and it is the public space that has to welcome us in a balanced and pleasant way. In this sence, we can learn to share much more than what we have shared so far ", concluded Gloria Hutt.
